As a work-from-home entrepreneur juggling a thriving business and a busy household, finding time to rest can feel like a luxury you simply can't afford.

Switching laundry happens right before the client call. Emails are written in the school pick up line. Focus blocks of work might not happen until the house is quiet for the evening.

And while taking time to rest in the midst of life-context-switching seems impossible — rest is essential. And not just the kind that involves sleep, but a more comprehensive, multifaceted approach that rejuvenates your entire being.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the 7 types of rest that are crucial for busy entrepreneurs like you — the ones who juggle building their dream business while building their dream life.

Understanding these can help you avoid burnout, stay productive, and maintain a sense of balance in your life. Try them all or pick and choose a few that feel right for you.

01. Physical Rest

Physical rest goes beyond getting enough sleep at night. It involves activities that help your body recover and restore energy.

  • Stretching Sessions: Incorporate short stretching breaks between work tasks to release tension, especially in your neck, shoulders, and back.

  • Power Naps: A 15 to 20-minute power nap can be a game-changer, helping you recharge quickly, especially on those days when you’re running on little sleep. The key is actually getting up when the timer goes off or you run the risk of falling back asleep and feeling sluggish the rest of the day.

  • Gentle Yoga: Spend 10-15 minutes in the morning or evening practicing gentle yoga to help your body unwind and stay flexible.

A great 5-minute routine for anyone who sits down at a desk, in front of a computer screen or TV for a long time.

My go-to power nap track to help me reboot during that afternoon energy dip.

A full body stretch in just 10 minutes!

02. Mental Rest

Mental rest is about giving your brain a break from the constant demands of work and life.

  • Mindful Breathing: Take 5-minute mindful breathing breaks to clear your head, especially after intense work sessions or during stressful moments.

  • Single Tasking: Instead of trying to juggle everything at once, schedule tasks into focused blocks of time, allowing your mind to concentrate on one thing at a time for less context switching.

  • Evening Brain Dump: Before bed, spend 10 minutes jotting down thoughts, ideas, and to-dos to free your mind from racing thoughts and ensure better sleep.

  • Reading Fiction: Instead of packing your brain with learning about personal development or new marketing ideas, read a book just for fun to get lost in the story and your own imagination.

    • Kindle Unlimited is the reason I can read so much (about 50+ books a year) without breaking the bank. If you’re a reader, it’s worth the monthly subscription!

03. Social Rest

Social rest is about spending time with those who restore your energy and limiting interactions that drain you. It’s about deep conversations with your favorite people, not networking hour chit chat.

  • Selective Socializing: Prioritize interactions with close friends or family who uplift you rather than trying to keep up with every social obligation.

  • Family Dinner Rituals: Create a tech-free dinner ritual with your family to foster deeper connections without distractions.

  • Quiet Alone Time: Schedule 15-30 minutes of quiet time daily where you can be alone to recharge without any social interactions.

04. Spiritual Rest

Spiritual rest involves connecting with something greater than yourself, which can bring a sense of peace and purpose.

  • Daily Meditation: Start your day with a 5-10 minute meditation to center yourself and set a positive tone.

  • Gratitude Journaling: Write down three things you're grateful for each day, focusing on the blessings that often go unnoticed.

  • Nature Walks: Take a walk outside, preferably in nature, to feel connected to the world beyond your daily grind.

  • Prayer: Set aside a few moments each day for personal prayer, offering a space to reflect, connect spiritually, and find a sense of peace in the midst of your busy schedule.

05. Emotional Rest

Emotional rest is about allowing yourself to express your feelings openly and honestly, without judgment.

  • Journaling: Spend time journaling your thoughts and emotions to process how you feel and why.

  • Therapy or Counseling: Regular sessions with a therapist or counselor can provide a safe space to unpack and manage your emotions.

  • Authentic Conversations: Have honest conversations with a trusted friend or partner where you can be yourself without needing to perform or please.

06. Sensory Rest

Sensory rest helps you recover from the overstimulation of screens, noise, and other environmental factors.

  • Screen-Free Time: Implement screen-free periods throughout your day, especially in the evening, to give your eyes and mind a break.

  • Social Media Rest: Take intentional breaks from social media throughout the day to reduce the constant influx of information and notifications, giving your mind a chance to relax and recharge and break the dopamine rush.

  • Quiet Breaks: Retreat to a quiet space in your home or backyard to escape the noise and find calm.

  • Minimalist Workspaces: Simplify your workspace by reducing clutter and distractions, allowing your senses to rest.

07. Creative Rest

Creative rest is about reawakening the sense of wonder and inspiration within you.

  • Artistic Hobbies: Engage in a creative hobby, such as painting, drawing, or writing, even if just for 10-15 minutes a day.

  • Inspiration Walks: Take a walk in a visually stimulating environment, such as a park or a gallery, to spark new ideas.

  • Listening to Music: Play music that inspires you while you work, or take time to listen to music purely for enjoyment.

Conclusion

Incorporating these 7 types of rest into your daily routine is not just about avoiding burnout—it's about enhancing your overall well-being and productivity. As a busy work-from-home entrepreneur with kids, it's easy to overlook the importance of rest, but by prioritizing it, you'll find that you're able to give more to your business and your family without running on empty.
